Sunshine and a sailboat

July 7
Sunshine appeared early and drew me out of bed. After coffee it was a morning of cleaning all the shell sand off the deck, dinghy and galley.  Then the crew took charge and skipper didn’t appear on deck all day.  Off to Dawson’s Landing but no showers as being repaired.  We headed deeper into Rivers Inlet. Past the water falling at Scandinavia Bay and into the end of Rivers Inlet. Because it was too deep to anchor we tied up to an old log boom at the old McTavish Cannery site which turned out to be a very stable anchorage.

Happy Birthday Tamara, my sister

July 6
Rain subsided but still overcast. Dave entertained us with an all day skiff excursion inside all kinds of bays. Saw some crab in eel grass in a shallow inlet so Karolina got out the fish net and started catching crab the Norwegian way. Went around another bend and saw seals playing and doing a mating ritual so we got out of the skiff on a muddy flat to watch. When the seals went under Anne spotted clams along the shore so we started digging up shells until we got enough for a meal.  Fished but only caught rockfish. Met travel writers Gordie and Cindy who shared lots of local knowledge including a bear mauling of a local guy yesterday.  Ended the day with a beach fire and roasted veggies and a seafood spread.  Don from Duncan came over for a quick visit to give his dog Maggie a  run.
I took a photo at 10pm of the shell beach in front of sailboat, very similar to photo at 10am.

Queen Charlotte Straight

July 4
Sailed across Queen Charlotte Straight around Cape Caution into Milbrook Cove. Steady breeze of 10 knots. Started to pour rain just as we dropped anchor.

Departure day.

July 3
Sailed across Queen Charlotte Sound under sail most of the way.  A humpback was off the beam for a time skimming as he didn’t deep dive for some time. Anchored in Millbrook Bay.  Great protected anchorage with large breakers over rock entrance.

Hookah

July 2
Dave took the boat to an inside bay so he could change out the propeller. I stayed on the skiff to monitor the compressor while he dove with a hookah system and a dry suit.  I spent some time at the library while Anne and Karolina had lunch and beers at the pub and Dave puttered on board.

Canada Day

July 1
My travelling companions left this am and since the boat engine was overheating we spent the day in town gathering some last minute supplies. Anne and I went to the airport to fetch Karolina from Norway- the final crew member.

A Taste of Cape Scott

June 30   Motored back into Pt. Hardy so Aimee could catch the bus homeand then Grace, Kathleen and I drove out to the W. coast and hiked the first part of Cape Scott trail.  We stopped at the Bruner Gardens first and encountered a bear in the brush who quickly scurried away upon our chatty entrance.

Anne arrived in the evening and we stayed at the dock overnight.
